Coleman 220K mantle lantern (1982)
I've had an interest in mantle lanterns ever since the excellent Technology Connections made a video series on them a few years ago. Let's take a look at a mint-in-box Coleman lantern, with some background on how they work.

This was my first ever personal computer. Still got it under my bed so i might dig it out and do this with it. It should run Linux Mint fairly well??
I just got one from the thrift store for 30 bucks perfect condition too
I’m curious how did you make that scratch,it’s really annoying for some reason the set is so perfect nice tv 😊
I have one very similar to this my dad bought new.
Hitachi uses number-letter-number datecodes. I saw 7D1 on those two ICs which corresponds to 1st week of April 1987.
Hey man hope u get this still but how can I turn on the TV mode without the corrds plz it's my mom's old 1
I'm not sure I understand your question. It turns on just by turning the power switch on.
@themaritimegirl o sorry I ment how to make it work today cuz in the video u used a cord and I don't have 1
Great video! I've worked on many of these and have amassed a reasonably sized collection, my oldest being from 1926. If you haven't already, I'd recommend picking up a copy of "Guide to Vintage Coleman Products." It's a wonderful book with great photos of vintage and antique Coleman stuff, not just lanterns.
@@TheUniversalDave1 Thanks! I don't suppose you have a 214 or a 639 you'd want to trade for this? 😁
If the light is to bright for you, you can get a frosted globe which blocks the light out put.
@@CITYPREPPER016 Only minimally, and it doesn't save any fuel.
I don't think I've ever seen this type of lantern where I live, only the old-style oil and paraffin ones, so it was quite fascinating to see how these work. Very cool indeed.
@@44CT232 I'm surprised. Kerosene pressure lamps made by the likes of Tilley and Petromax are common in the UK, so I figured SA would have them as well.
@@themaritimegirl They may well exist here, but I don't believe I've seen them. Paraffin lamps are still very commonly used in rural areas with limited access to electricity.
the key to getting less smell using wick lamps is to use parrafin fuel.
I feel like a lot of people have a story with these lanterns like yours. When I was a kid I remember burning my finger on one after my mother told me not to, while we were camping. I learned very quickly not to touch the lantern. And for that reason I would like to get one lol. Loved the video as usual
You can of course buy Naphtha from the Zippo company, but it costs a lot more than the Coleman can. However, Zippo do still sell those hand heaters (or did just a few years ago). So I imagine Coleman just wasn’t selling enough of them after those re-boil hand warmers got popular. Zippo’s target market seems pretty niche, at regular winter campers and various kinds of people with jobs in forests (like park rangers). Basically they try to sell at people who are tired of carrying potentially dozens of those boil-at-home hand warmers, and would rather just carry a can of Naphtha.
I have watched and am subbed to Alec's TC channel and the 2nd channel also great channel I also enjoy your channel and have been subbed since before changes (sorry I am not sure of a diplomatic way of wording it I don't want to offend you)
excellent overview and thanks for the clarification on fuel sources for the 220. Every year on Victoria day long weekend in May the spring run high water carried our canoes 68km on the southwest Miramichi canoe run from Half moon up by Juniper to Norrad bridge down by Boiestown. These lanterns were the standard. Thanks for putting this together.
I have two Coleman D-cell battery powered lanterns I run indoors. They both are designed to look like this liquid gas lantern, and even have the metal hanging loop at the top, but are safer. D-cell lanterns are very efficient. I can run it 6 hours every night and the 4 batteries last about a month and a half to two months of use. I seem to get 400 hours of useful light out of a single set of 4 D batteries when set on low. The models I have are: Coleman Classic 500 Lumens LED Lantern, and the Coleman 1900 collection D-cell lantern (which is hard to find, it's always out of stock, or maybe discontinued).
What source of illumination do your lanterns use? I assume they're LEDs, right? I know Colman made rechargeable fluorescent lamps back in the 90s.
Have you seen the video that Technology Connections made about these lanterns? Very informative.
I realize I incorrectly switch the terms "lantern" and "lamp" a few times throughout the video. Soz. Also, I've finally accepted that there is something wrong with the microphones in my phone, and future videos will be using another method of audio capture.
What an unforgivable mistake 🤪great video!
It seems to have all the right stuff that people want thank you Mazda finely a car company that listens to what people want😊😊😊😊
There was a Nortel 500 phone similar to this made in the Republic of Ireland, and they rang with a swift double ring as they did in the UK since Ireland's system was based on the UK telephone system originally.

Is it possible to turn off ECO mode? I can't figure it out, for the life of me, and it's causing trouble. x.x
@@Sadeyr No. Eco mode just means it's not running on the inverter. It wouldn't make sense for it to run on the inverter all the time, as it's a line-interactive UPS.
@@themaritimegirl The problem I am having is sudden power jumps which, when in eco mode, the system is not catching fast enough so it is affecting my PC. It only kicks into eco mode a moment after the shift happens and it causes a lot of trouble, and from what Ive gathered the way people fix this issue is by disabling the eco mode on their cyberpower UPS'. This one in particular seems to lack the ability to turn it off, though. : / The last one I had just had a button for it, I assumed this one would have some kind of setting to do so but it doesn't
Have you tried turning the sensitivity up? That might fix the responsiveness issues.
@@themaritimegirl Ive been messing with it a little, though it is a little confusing to me. It mentions that a lower sensitivity is good for unstable connections and will make the battery kick on less, but wouldn't you want that with an unstable connection?
@@themaritimegirl Er, sorry, I was talking about 'Utility Power' for that. It says to put utility power at low for unstable connections so the battery kicks on less, but Im unsure if that is a good thing or not. I do have sensitivity on high now!
Does this use the same ribbon as the Electra XT?
Have this model and came here to see if you ever found an issue for the ghosting issue? I have it really bad, but especially when playing 8 bit games.
My dad had one of these from the place he used to work at when I was very young. He held onto it long enough that it is now in my possession!
You should convert them into your DVD
I think they include the jumper to power up the power supply on it's own for priming a water cooling loop. That's what I thought anyways because I had one of those come with a reservoir kit I bought like 2 years ago in 2012... wait...

I found a western electric 544 today at an antique shop. It’s made for a key system but it only has 4 keys. Mine came with the original kind cord to. Apparently it’s rare so I might sell it because I don’t have a key system.
Not a bad machine, kind of like a larger version of my X31. The CPU isn't fast by today's standards but I'd agree that there's no need to upgrade. I mainly just use mine for faxing and my 1.6GHz CPU is more than enough.
What a neat little machine. I got two Thinkpads myself, a fairly modern X390 and my good old T430s (old by years, not by usability with an SSD, 8 gigs Ram and i5 processor). Thinkpads are just great computers!
How can I set the time in this watch?
Hi this video is amazing thanks so much! I actually come from the skateboard world and I was wondering why this camera I got looked so familiar lol but I was wondering how you get the tape to the computer? Like how do you get what you filmed onto the computer and be able to edit it?
You need a computer with a FireWire port and the WinDV software which can be downloaded free. If you have a desktop PC you can buy a PCI-e FireWire card for cheap.
